What to expect when commissionning a designer-maker?
Each designer has their own way to proceed but the process is always friendly and transparent. A bespoke piece comes to life through the following broad steps.
- Preliminary conversation - at the gallery or where the piece is going to be. Bring as many or as few ideas as you have.
- First designs - The designer-maker will submit several designs to see if he is on the right track.
- Formal quote - once you are broadly agreed with the design and specs, the designer will send you a formal quote including all details and expected schedule.
- Quote acceptance - If you are agreed you will be asked to accept the quote (this may involve the payment of a deposit), and the designer-maker will schedule your piece. You may change aspects of the design right up to construction. It is your project. The designer-maker will adapt the designs to meet your requirement and will also let you know if the changes affect the quote level.
- Construction - shortly before the start of construction you will be contacted by the designer-maker who will inform you of his schedule and likely delivery. You will probably be asked to make an interim payment to cover the cost of materials. All throughout the construction you will be kept informed of developments and you may be invited to visit to check progress and make any decision that need making.
- Delivery - once the piece is finished a time will be agreed with you for delivery and fitting where applicable. The balance of your order is payable then.
- Aftercare - wood is a living material, it moves and adjusts according to its environment. This will have been taken into consideration in the design and construction. However our designer makers will usually contact you some time after delivery and fitting to ensure that any post-delivery adjustments are made.
